Position Title: Content Developer

Department: Programs

Reports to: Chief Program Officer

Position Summary

The Content Developer is responsible for developing content for NLM’s exhibitions and learning programs. This work includes facilitating content development meetings with internal and external stakeholders, including community advisors, educators, scholars and more; identifying and distilling key messages, themes, and big ideas; conceptualizing stories, and crafting narratives that are the foundation of NLM’s activities. The Content Developer will ensure all projects are anchored in those narratives for the duration of the project and that content is delivered clearly, accurately, and creatively in everything the museum produces.

The Content Developer will directly support the development of NLM’s content collection by conceptualizing, creating, designing, organizing, and archiving an array of digital text and audio-visual content and print items in support of the museum’s evolving exhibition program. Content items may include but are not limited to artist interviews, podcast episodes, documentary shorts, interactive websites and kiosks, research briefs, and exhibition supplementary materials. The Content Developer will collect, process, and integrate materials produced by visitors through museum interactives into the collection, cycling some components back into content presented by the museum. As NLM shifts to include a community co-curation model in which community partners influence exhibition planning and implementation, the Content Developer will also document collaborative processes and projects. The Content Developer will use and adapt the museum’s emerging digital media infrastructure, including a digital asset management system, to produce, store, and widely distribute its content.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate content development meetings with internal and external stakeholders, including community advisors, scholars, educators, and more ensuring a diversity of perspectives.
  • Support programming and design teams in developing content and storylines for exhibitions and multi-media experiences that cover a variety of topics in the arts and humanities, including history, political philosophy and civics.
  • Conduct in-depth research across a range of topics, disciplines, and perspectives.
  • Determine relevancy and accuracy of printed, online, and first-person resources, including academic papers, journalism, popular information networks, original art and artifacts, etc.
  • Summarize information clearly and accurately.
  • Filter and sort sources and information for team members.
  • Fact-check sources and NLM’s own work.
  • Copy-edit internal documents for correct and easy-to-understand written English.
  • Locate photographs, art, audio, and video for potential use in exhibitions.

Desired Impact

The Content Developer will engage diverse audiences through thoughtful and thought-provoking content that supports the museum’s exhibition programming, interpretive strategies, and public outreach, resulting in:

  • A coherent body of work that adds to the museum’s interpretation of liberty and all its facets (historical, philosophical, experiential, etc.)
  • An organized, accessible, and growing “living collection” of museum content across platforms.
  • Increased reach to museum visitors and to those interacting with off-site museum programming.
  • Increased public awareness of the museum’s purpose, programs, and partners.
  • Deepened engagement with the museum in the form of online and in-person interactions.

Skills, Experience, and Education

  • Commitment to and experience in facilitating non-partisan, cross-perspective dialogues about current events and critical issues related to liberty and liberal societies.
  • Energized by conceptualizing key messages, crafting narratives, and engaging audiences through multimedia story-telling.
  • Excited to ask questions, pitch ideas, and see projects through to completion.
  • Undaunted by complexity and the need for thoughtful problem-solving.
  • Curiosity and passion for learning.
  • Astute research ability and information literacy.
  • Culturally competent and able to collaborate effectively with diverse groups.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with especially strong English grammar knowledge and proofreading ability.
  • Advanced degree in relevant humanities subject highly desired.

Salary

Salary is negotiable with experience in a range of $55,000-75,000.

Position Title: Museum Educator and School Programs Associate

Department: Learning and Engagement

Reports to: Director of Learning and Engagement

Position Summary

As a member of the Learning and Engagement team, the Museum Educator and School Programs Associate is an advocate for students and teachers in the planning of exhibitions and programs and will play a key role in the development of curriculum and educational resources connected to the Museum’s exhibitions. Working closely with the Director of Learning and Engagement, the Museum Educator and School Programs Associate supports the Museum’s school programs and serves as the point person for related administrative tasks. This position will contribute to the delivery of lessons, field trips, group visits, and the Young Heroes Outreach Program (YHOP).

As part of the team of Museum Educators, the position contributes to the development and delivery of education and public programs for the Museum’s core audiences, including: adults, families, students, and teachers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support in the development and production of NLM school programs, including field trips, educator open houses, teacher professional development, and the Young Heroes Outreach Program.
  • Support in the administration and communication of the Young Heroes Outreach Program.
  • Support in the development and design of curriculum and educational resources connected to the Museum’s content and exhibitions.
  • Coordinate the documentation of attendance and collection of evaluations from program participants and prepare reports for management.
  • Collaborate with other departments as a representative for school programs to ensure strong communication, organization, and development regarding exhibitions and programs, including but not limited to:
    • Drafting Event Memos and organizing staffing, run of show, supplies, and resources for all on-site school programs.
    • Drafting copy and program information for marketing and outreach.
    • Coordinating facilities and operation needs for all on-site school programs.
    • Structuring the visitor experience for all school programs through staffing, itineraries, and museum shop offerings.
    • Advocating for youth, student, and teacher perspectives and experiences.
  • Conduct all virtual/in-person classroom visits and maintain working relationships with teachers for assigned schools participating in the Young Heroes Outreach Program.
  • With other Museum Educators, lead weekday museum tours for all school, community, adult, and youth groups.
  • With other Museum Educators, facilitate activities and experiences for visitors during public programs and events.
  • Assist in the daily facilitation of the Learning & Engagement department, and various administrative duties including correspondence with schools, correspondence with partners, budgeting, meetings, and supply management.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills, Experience, and Education

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in formal and/or informal learning environments, preferably in a classroom setting
  • Comfortable working with youth in diverse communities
  • Excellent writing and public speaking abilities
  • Knowledge of the Philadelphia school systems and understanding of the Philadelphia arts and culture scene
  • Familiarity with K-12 curriculum, national and state education standards, inquiry-led learning, and project-based learning
  • Proven ability to work effectively and flexibly in a team environment
  • Bachelor’s degree required, teaching certification a plus
  • Meet standards for background check and clearance requirements
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends, as needed

Salary

Salary is negotiable with experience in a range of $40,000-50,000.

Position Title: Director of Development

Department: Development

Reports to:  Chief Executive Officer

Position Summary

The National Liberty Museum (NLM) seeks an extraordinary leader to oversee its development department and diverse philanthropic initiatives. Reporting to the Museum’s Chief Executive Officer, the successful candidate will bring a unique blend of energy, creativity, and strategy to the task of expanding the Museum’s support base through fundraising. An enthusiastic collaborator and thought partner, the Director of Development will build and lead a team of up to three development professionals with expertise in major gifts, institutional giving, special events, and development operations.

The successful candidate will thrive in dynamic settings with dedicated stakeholders and trustees and serve as an impassioned ambassador for the Museum and its growth.  A desire and ability to cultivate new relationships while also sustaining and enhancing the Museum’s existing donors will be critical to the success of the role. The Director of Development will embrace the creative culture of the institution and enjoy collaborating with curators and programmers to advance support for the exhibitions and educational programs that are at its core. They will have a proven track record of closing significant gifts of six figures, working in close coordination with the CEO and leadership team. Professionalism, trustworthiness, honesty, and belief in the institution’s mission will be hallmarks of the Director of Development’s success as an essential member of the Museum’s staff and key contributor to its financial future.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a strategic, comprehensive fundraising plan that ensures effective results and meets both annual and long-term financial goals.
  • Successfully lead the development team in securing $3+ million in annual support, in addition to endowed and capital gifts.
  • Strong understanding of fundraising strategies, development operations, and finance with capacity to advise and support on major giving initiatives, including identifying, cultivating and stewarding donors.
  • Serve as the staff liaison to the Board’s Development Committee.
  • Represent the Museum at key donor and foundation meetings and events.
  • Establish revenue plans and implement performance goals, objectives, and action plans; generate buy-in around a data-driven approach to goal setting and benchmarking.
  • Produce detailed reports on the Museum’s fundraising for the CEO, leadership team, and Board.
  • Build, manage and mentor a department of up to three full-time staff.
  • Oversee multiple annual fundraising initiatives including: the Gala, the Year-End Appeal, and our sponsored awards programs.
  • Will involve some evening/weekend/holiday work.

Skills, Experience, and Education

  • A minimum of 7 years of proven fundraising experience, preferably in the non-profit, Museum, or cultural sectors, with five or more years demonstrated success at a senior management level of a similarly sized organization.
  • Experience in the planning, implementing, and managing comprehensive fundraising campaigns, including experience with capital campaigns.
  • Demonstrated experience with multiple categories of giving such as major gifts, foundation, government, and corporate support, planned giving, and special events.
  • A demonstrated capacity to lead, manage, and motivate a team.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree in relevant field preferred, or relevant experience.
  • Goal-oriented campaign strategist who can create and execute new giving opportunities and programs expanding the NLM’s financial resources.
  • Self-starter who can work independently and collaborate with colleagues and volunteer leadership.
  • Confident and effective relationship builder who enjoys meeting with new and existing supporters.
  • Familiarity with the Philadelphia community and philanthropic relationships.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong ability to work in cross-functional, cross-department teams.
  • Knowledge of donor CRMs, Altru database experience a plus

Salary

Salary is negotiable with experience in a range of $75,000-90,000.
